It's difficult to contain my excitement when I paint. I like to use ALL my bright, happy colours. And I like to create LOTS of shapes and lines and textures. Needless to say, there is always too much for the eye/brain to absorb. Even mine. So I edit. I remove elements - even the good ones. That breaks my heart, sometimes, but it's necessary.
In this painting my goal was to have quite a bit of "neutral" area where the eye could rest. The trick is to have the quiet area not look BORING. I ended up with a monochromatic colour scheme of yellows, golds and creams. I'm happy with it. I think that area looks interesting and I still have some excitement with all the pinks on the other side.
There's Still Time.
If you haven't had a chance to see the show at the Vancouver Public Art Gallery, there's still time. What's not to love about Cezanne, Van Gogh, Manet and a little Shadbolt thrown in the mix? Oh, and then there is that fabulous gift shop! What a great way to spend a few hours.
